What To Expect During A Treatment

During your first appointment your osteopath will spend time asking you about your presenting complaint and your medical history, this will provide us a thorough understanding of your overall health as well as your presenting complaint. Based on your case history, there will be a thorough osteopathic examination to assess your body’s function. This may involve diagnostic, orthopaedic and neurological tests, as well as postural analysis, and the testing of a muscle strength/stretch, and joint range.

Osteopathy takes a holistic approach to treatment, so your practitioner will look at other parts of your body, as well as the area that is troubling you. For example, if you have a sore knee, it is very common for your osteopath to look at your ankle/foot, pelvis and back.

Your osteopath will then use hands-on treatment to help reduce your pain and improve your function. Osteopaths are trained in a range of techniques, tailored to your individual needs and goals. Some of the techniques that may be included in your treatment plan are:

  • Deep tissue massage
  • Joint mobilisation and articulation
  • Stretching/ Muscle Energy Techniques
  • Myofascial release
  • HVLA (Manipulation)
  • Dry Needling
  • Cranial Osteopathy (Biodynamic Osteopathy)

Your osteopath will choose the most suitable style of treatment for you on the day. Regardless of the style chosen, the osteopath will be able to work on the same muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia, and the nervous and the circulatory systems to facilitate change. Also, despite the style, the osteopath can assist in the treatment of the same presenting complaints – to read more about what osteopaths can treat click here.

After your treatment your osteopath will provide education and advice to help you manage your condition – which may include exercises for you to do at home, as well as education on lifestyle factors such as diet and posture.

There will always be a discussion with you about what we have found during examination and treatment. Knowledge is power- we believe if you have a thorough understanding of your diagnosis and overall health you can also help to take steps to better improve your function and better manage your pain or complaint.

At The Homebody Clinic we have established relationships with other local allied health practitioners and GP’s- if we feel a referral to another modality will also help, such as a naturopath, an acupuncturist, massage therapist, podiatrist, or a Pilates or yoga instructor, we can recommend you to a supportive local practitioner too. We may also refer you for further diagnostic testing and or imaging.

This patient centred, holistic approach focuses on a personalised and evidence-based treatment- which will get you feeling and moving better sooner!
